What You Need To Know About Web Testing

Web Testing

Web testing can encompass a number of different issues depending on the complexity of the project. The importance of the web site testing should not be discounted because projects that are dependent on important stored data or ecommerce functions need to be stress tested, security tested and subject to functional performance review to ensure that the site complies with end user requirements. Web development companies that do not perform adequate web page testing are liable for cost overrun and potential damage claims if important data is lost. If the client disapproves or find fault with the functional performance of the site, web development companies can be subject to severe financial and credibility backlash.

Simple brochure based interface sites with minimal functionality only require basic web testing encompassing platform and browser checks to ensure the sites loads correctly, fits the desired screen sizes and displays the data in a clear and meaningful way. This will involve PC and Macintosh system checks, link structure checking and loading the site in Firefox and Microsoft browsers. This includes checking different browser versions. In some web development companies, additional browsers may be tested depending on current browser web trends and how extensively the test framework desires to cover the browser market.

Web Testing

Sites with ecommerce functionality need to be subject to the above interface web testing, web application testing and additional stress and security checks. Any site that involves database integration requires server side and client side checks. Data integrity is first and foremost a concern so any front end integration with the site needs to be stress tested for a range of data transactions and inputs to ensure appropriate client side checks prevent erroneous data from being submitted and written to the database. This also involves making sure the code structure does not allow invasive code injection which can sabotage database integrity and structure. The developer responsible for the project is required to do due diligence on project completion and should reference a standard web testing plan. Calls to the interface with a payment gateway require rigorous web testing to enhance robustness and prevent hacker based attacks.

Government based web sites often have more stringent formal requirements to cater to potential visitors who have visual impairment. In some cases, additional or alternative interface structures need to be developed and web tested to cater to alternative scenarios. The World Wide Web Consortium releases a standard benchmark set of standards that are graded according to different subsets. Depending on how strict a government follows these protocols will govern and comprise the extent to which a website is required to adhere to these standards. In the case of the more stringent standards, testing web sites will need to be extensive to meet the desired graded guidelines.
