Essential Tools And Considerations For Network Testing

Network Testing

Network testing is defined as the actual measurement and recording of a network's state of operation over a period of time. These checks are essential for the smooth functioning of the network performance. Network testing can be carried out with the help of various services that are provided by different service providers to conduct network performance testing or network security testing.

Networks can fail to perform under several conditions. However, thorough testing is required to find out the reason for this. When two computers are connected via a local network, or have different firewall settings, issues can arise when they try to communicate with each other. To have perfect diagnostic information, tools should be used that can decipher the success or failure of communication and to isolate the cause.

Various tools that can be used for network testing are -

* Port Query: This tool is freely available. It helps in troubleshooting issues related to the transfer control protocol. It can also be used to resolve issues related to the user datagram protocol. This tool can be used for a single port or a sequential range of ports. This program can also be used to receive detailed information about other ports that are being used in the same network.

* Telnet: This tool can be used to check the connectivity for any Transfer Protocol Port. It can check if connectivity is possible for a given telnet port. This tool is also used to log on to the telnet server.

* PPTP Ping - PPTP ping is a set of two network testing tools. PPTP stands for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol. It helps an individual to check whether data can be sent and received from a server to a client computer. However, this tool only checks if the data can be transferred. It does not check if the two systems can establish a connection or not.

* Test Transfer Client Protocol: This tool is used to listen to and send TCP segment data between two communication points. However, if communication has to be checked between two different ports then separate command prompt windows have to be opened. At any one time, it can only check the connectivity between two ports.

Apart from these, certain specific network testing tools are also available. Generally there are two components in these kits. One is the console that allows monitoring the performance of the computers while the other runs in the background. This happens on each system that is being tested. Firstly, the console directs the system to perform a test. On completion of this, end point one sends a complete detailed report of the test to the console. This report can then be generated and seen in the form of an HTML document. This tool can give various results like the response time, streaming and throughput rates.

A person can choose form the available range of network testing tools according to the need of the individual or organization.
